A Marriage Built on an Heir

A Marriage Built on an Heir
The demand for a son
Lavinia gives birth under the supervision of a chosen midwife while Ashley Hunter waits for news. When the child is a girl, he orders Zillah to get rid of her and arranges a false account of a stillbirth.
Grief without knowledge
Lavinia is left to believe that another daughter has died. The deception compounds her sorrow and conceals the survival of the child who will grow up as Sunday Small.
A Life After Loss

A Life After Loss
Turning outward
After years of seclusion following three stillborn daughters, Lavinia joins the Board of Guardians and visits Nuneaton Union Workhouse. Helping children gives her a new focus beyond her unhappy marriage.
Compassion with limits
She helps Sunday find work and later investigates what happened to Cissie. Lavinia’s kindness matters, though her ability to challenge abuses is constrained by entrenched authority and the risk of public scandal.
A Dangerous Pregnancy

A Dangerous Pregnancy
Hope and fear together
Lavinia discovers she is pregnant again after resuming relations with Ashley. She longs for a child but fears another stillbirth, while her husband measures the pregnancy against his need for an heir.
Violence and premature birth
Ashley’s anger and drinking contribute to a confrontation in which Lavinia falls down the stairs. She gives birth prematurely to Stephen Huntley while unconscious and suffers severe injury and bleeding.
The Loss of Stephen

The Loss of Stephen
A fragile beginning
Lavinia recovers enough to meet her premature son and loves him intensely. Molly Worthington nurses him with extraordinary patience, but Stephen’s early weakness leaves him vulnerable.
Grief returns
During the measles epidemic, Stephen becomes gravely ill and dies despite the family’s care. Lavinia’s longed-for experience of motherhood is real but brief, renewing the grief she has carried since the deaths of her daughters.
Mother and Daughter Reunited

Mother and Daughter Reunited
A confession at last
After Ashley’s death, Zillah tells Lavinia that the child she believed dead was carried to the workhouse and survived as Sunday. Lavinia immediately wants to find her daughter and explain the truth.
A gradual reconciliation
Sunday initially rejects Lavinia, believing she was deliberately abandoned. After learning that Zillah acted to save her from Ashley, she brings violets to Lavinia at church and accepts her as her mother.
